I tried to upgrade the SSD in my steam deck recently, and in the process I stripped a screw. As I went in blind, without a guide or tips from Reddit or anything of the sort, I learned the hard way that the screws holding down the thermal shield require a Phillips size 1 screwdriver bit. I used size 0, which not only stripped the screw but nearly stripped others and most importantly, caused bits of metal dust to spread around in my steam decks innards.
No it didn’t short or fry or anything devastating. Instead I had the strangest error: my B and X buttons, starting about 24 hours after the upgrade and reoccurring about a minute after every boot, both register as pressed at the same time. When I press B, both B and X register as pressed. When I press X, same thing.
I’m not completely certain if the stripped screw and the metal dust are the cause of this issue but what else could it be? Especially since it started about 24 hours after the upgrade, so I’m assuming the dust traveled around before causing the problem.
In the end I was resigned to sending in my steam deck to be repaired by Valve, and I’ll update when I have a diagnosis.
TLDR: when messing around the inside of your steam deck, be super careful and be sure to have both Phillips screwdriver sizes 0 and 1, and above all, be cautious and don’t force it.
If your screw gives you trouble, try the next size up. If it doesn’t fit at all, try the size down. This last part goes for electronics and screws in general.
